JCB wins huge power generation deal at prestigious Canary Wharf

JCB Broadcrown has secured a contract to provide stand-by power at one of London’s most striking and mixed use developments.

Standing 27 storeys high, the 700,000 sq ft development – known as One Bank Street – is being built at Canary Wharf and when completed in 2018 will be one the capital’s most prestigious commercial buildings.

The multi-million pound contract to provide stand-by power has been awarded to JCB by Canary Wharf Contractors Limited. The deal includes the installation of five 2500kVA/2MW diesel generators, plant room noise attenuation, mechanical and electrical installation, basement level fuel tanks, a power management system and commissioning of the installation over the next two years.

Ian Hobson, Senior Project Manager, Canary Wharf Contractors Limited said “JCB Broadcrown demonstrated a clear understanding of the complex project requirements, and proposed a robust and cost effective solution to meet those requirements.”

JCB Power Products MD Jonathan Garnham said: “Being awarded this contract is another huge endorsement of the expertise and experience of the installation at JCB Broadcrown, and the skills and knowledge that we can offer to customers.”

Designed by architects Kohn Pederson Fox, One Bank Street will comprise high quality office space, including three trading floors, a retail unit at ground level, basement car and cycle parking, plus landscaping with access to a new promenade along the South Dock.

JCB Broadcrown will install the five G2500SMU5 diesel generators on the 26th floor of the building, creating an acoustically-lined plant room to house the 10MW power supply – enough energy to power up to 5,000 domestic homes for 24 hours. The JCB Broadcrown designed power management system (PMS) will provide sequenced load control for critical load supply, to avoid the chance of generator failure.

The company’s highly-skilled electrical and mechanical engineers will work with installation and commissioning teams over the next two years to ensure that the generators are in place and commissioned well before the building is handed over in 2019. Secure bulk fuel tanks will be assembled and installed at basement level in April of this year, as part of the construction works.

The plant room acoustic fit-out will commence in the third quarter of 2017, while the electrical systems and power management system will be built and approved by June of this year, ready for installation in the second quarter of 2018. The five generator sets that will be built at JCB Broadcrown’s Hixon base in Staffordshire will undergo rigorous testing at the factory prior to installation.

JCB Broadcrown has worked in partnership with Canary Wharf Contractors Limited , a member of the Canary Wharf Group, for more than 16 years. Over that time, JCB Broadcrown has completed 11 projects, installing 31 generators and providing 62MW of critical power.
