China funds new 500 km road to connect Mozambique and South Africa

China funds new 500 km road to connect Mozambique and South Africa

Construction of the 500km Mapinhane-Pafuri regional road (N222) road connecting the Vilanculos district to the Mozambique and South African border is expected to begin in May 2018 and be completed three years later.

This new road covers the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo, in southern Mozambique.

According to a representative of South African company – Capital Projects, the company had US$780 million made available through a partnership between Capital Projects and China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd.

China Harbor Engineering Company is involved in a US$1 billion investment project to build a new port in Maputo province to serve Mozambique and the neighbouring countries including South Africa.
